Causes and Symptoms of Hand Pain
Hand pain can be associated with other pains causing symptoms one of which is known as De Quervain’s Tendinitis which also denotes hand pain. De Quervain’s Tendinitis causes the pain of the thumb side along the wrist. The onset of this pain may start gradually over a period of time or it develops suddenly. This is caused by the inflammation of the tissues that connect muscle to the bone. Such pain originates from the thumb and travels across the length of the forearm. Symptoms of having De Quervain’s Tendinitis are confirmed when the patient finds it painful while:
- Making a fist
- Grasping or holding on to objects (for quite some time)
- Bending or twisting the wrist
- Lifting or carrying heavy objects
- Keeping the hand in uplifted position for long
This pain is developed when the tendons around the wrist get irritated or inflamed located at the base of the thumb. Such activities that are performed by the patient repetitively or overuse of the same hand are also some of the causes for de Quervain’s or Hand Pain. When the newly born babies are fed by the newly become mothers and holding the baby for long in awkward position can also drive this pain in hand.
Females managing the households and doing cooking, washing dishes and doing laundry also gets this pain more often as compared to males as they keep on twisting their wrists and putting unnecessary weight on their hand repetitively. Wrist fractures during accidents can also turn into de Quervain’s.
Osteoarthritis is another reason of having Hand Pain. This happens when the when the shock-absorbing cartilage lying between the bones in the finger joints and at the base of the thumb gets worn or even damaged. Hand pain can also be caused from certain nerve conditions that create unnecessary pressure on the median nerve in the wrist or the ulnar nerve which is near the elbow creating pain and tingling.

- Cortisone shots are other pain relieving injections given to the patient at the area or the joints to effectively reduce the hand pain. The effect of these injections continues to stay for about a year.
- NSAIDs is another anti-inflammatory medicine that acts on the pain producing enzymes making them to stop producing pain and swelling. Ibuprofen can also cause ulcers when taken for long.
- Using wrist bands, heat producing sprays and heating the wrist can also suppress the pain producing stimulus and benefits the patients in reducing the pain.
