The Problem
At My Pain Clinic, we help our patients manage their pain and related problems. This includes not just treating the symptoms and relieving pain, but also helping them manage other problems that may arise due to the problem, or in some cases, the treatment. Opioid Dependence is perhaps the most common example of the latter.
Opioids are a family of pain reliving drugs commonly prescribed to people with severe and constant pain issues. Regular usage, or abuse, of Opioids can actually cause addiction or dependence in patients. According to a survey, nearly 2 million people in the US are actually dependent on Opioids. Most common types of Opioids in this regard include hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine, codeine, fentanyl, and methadone.
The Symptoms
If a patient is using prescribed dosage of Opioid, it is quite difficult to diagnose the problem. The symptoms usually occur when the usage is stopped and the patients start to show withdrawal symptom. For those whose dependence has not yet gone to the addiction level, the pain returns and is hard to manage without continuing the usage of Opioid again. In more severe cases, the withdrawal symptoms can range from nausea, chilling, sweating, and vomiting to diarrhea, and insomnia.
While the symptoms are not necessarily dangerous, they can cause extreme discomfort and frustration. Patients going through this phase can actually cause harm to themselves and to others surrounding them.
At My Pain Clinic, we help patients get over their Opioid dependence by properly going through their prescription history as well as their symptoms and conditions. We create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
The Treatment
Opioid dependence, like any other drug dependence, has both physical and psychological aspects to consider. With this understanding, we create a custom treatment plan that includes psychological sessions as well as medicine and pain relief therapy to help patients manage pain through alternative means.
Our multidisciplinary approach helps our patients take control of the problem and play a more positive role in the whole treatment, and we rely on diagnostic tests like x-rays, MRI, CT scan, EMG/NCV studies and ultrasounds to come up with a customized treatment and rehabilitation plan for you
The treatment often achieved by substituting the Opioid by another pain relieving medicine. There are several drugs such as Buprenorphine/Suboxone that can be used to rectify the effect of Opioids.
